The strongest Squarespace alternative depends on why you are leaving. Choose Wix for more layout freedom and a broader range of built-in business tools, Shopify for serious ecommerce, WordPress.org for technical ownership, Webflow or Framer for advanced design control, and Hostinger for a lower promotional entry price. If the problem is the work of building a website, compare managed services instead of switching editors.
Squarespace already provides polished templates, hosting, visual editing and useful content tools. An alternative is worthwhile only when it changes something that matters to the business.

Why look beyond Squarespace?
Squarespace is a good fit for many portfolios, consultants, restaurants and service businesses. Its visual system reduces the chance of inconsistent spacing or typography, and every paid plan includes hosting and the ability to sell. Staying is sensible when its templates fit, the content is easy to maintain and the site supports the customer journey.
A different route may be justified when:
the design needs more granular responsive control;
a shop needs stronger stock, order, shipping or multichannel operations;
the business wants to choose its host or control the code and database;
the current plan and extras no longer represent value;
a team needs a different content workflow;
the owner wants somebody else to take responsibility for the site.
Name the limitation before choosing the replacement. Switching platforms without a defined requirement often creates a costly rebuild with the same underlying copy and navigation problems.
How we assessed the alternatives
We compared buying models as well as products. Each option was checked for setup effort, design control, content and SEO capability, hosting and maintenance, ecommerce fit, migration implications and current entry price.
We have not reduced those factors to a single score. A flexible platform looks weak if ease is weighted heavily and strong if ownership matters most. The useful result is a shortlist matched to your constraints.

Direct DIY alternatives
1. Wix: best for broader creative and business-tool choice
Wix offers a more permissive visual canvas than Squarespace and a large range of native features and apps. It can suit owners who want to position elements more freely or combine bookings, events, ecommerce and marketing tools in one hosted platform.
The UK Light plan displayed at £9 a month on annual billing, while Core at £16 added payments and basic ecommerce. Wix also had a free branded plan. The extra freedom brings more decisions, particularly around spacing, type and mobile layout. A consistent design system still needs to be defined and followed.
Our Wix versus Squarespace guide compares the editors, prices, SEO controls and portability in detail.
2. Hostinger Website Builder: best for a lower entry price
Hostinger combines hosting, templates, an AI-assisted starting process and basic ecommerce. Premium Website Builder was advertised at £2.99 a month excluding VAT on a 48-month term, renewing at £10.99. Assess the total commitment rather than the first monthly equivalent.
It can be a practical choice for a simple brochure site when the owner is comfortable building it. Trial the editor with a real page and check required forms, integrations and support. Saving on the platform will not remove the cost of writing, images or your time.
3. Shopify: best for an online shop
Squarespace can sell products on every paid plan, but Shopify is designed around commerce operations. Products, orders, inventory, payments, shipping and sales channels sit at the centre of the system. Shopify Basic displayed at £19 a month on annual billing or £25 month to month in the UK.
That specialisation matters when a retailer has a growing catalogue, fulfilment rules or several sales channels. It adds unnecessary administration when the website mainly explains a service and collects enquiries. Choose Shopify because commerce drives the business, not because a future shop is vaguely possible.
Open-platform alternative
4. WordPress.org: best for control and extensibility
WordPress.org is open-source software installed with a host you choose. It supports custom themes, plugins, content types and integrations, and gives the site owner direct access to files and data. It can grow from a modest content site into a complex publishing or membership system.
There is no software licence fee, but “free” is not the project cost. Hosting, design, development, premium extensions, security, backups and support need budgets. WordPress's official guidance recommends keeping core, themes and plugins current and backing up before updates.
Choose it when ownership and extensibility justify the management model. If nobody is clearly responsible for maintenance, that flexibility can become a collection of overdue updates and uncertain plugin dependencies.
Advanced design alternatives
5. Webflow: best for a custom responsive design system
Webflow gives a skilled designer detailed control over layout, breakpoints, interactions and structured CMS content. It is closer to visual front-end development than a conventional template builder. The Basic Site plan displayed at $15 a month annually; Premium at $25 added dynamic content and a larger page allowance.
Webflow suits a business working with a designer who can establish reusable components and govern the CMS. It is less suitable for an owner who values Squarespace precisely because it limits design decisions. Code export is available through eligible paid Workspaces, but CMS data, ecommerce and form handling require separate consideration outside Webflow.
6. Framer: best for design-led marketing sites
Framer provides a flexible canvas, responsive components, animation and a hosted CMS. Basic displayed at $10 a month annually with 30 pages and two CMS collections. Pro displayed at $30 with more pages, staging and redirects; additional editors are charged separately.
It can be excellent for a distinctive landing site, portfolio or product-marketing experience. The quality still depends on hierarchy, accessibility, copy and mobile decisions. Switching from Squarespace to Framer makes sense when somebody wants and can use that creative control.
Fully managed Squarespace alternative
7. A managed service: best for buying the outcome
Sometimes Squarespace is not the problem. The owner simply does not want to structure pages, prepare images, adjust mobile layouts or remember which settings affect search and accessibility. Another self-service platform transfers the same responsibility into a different dashboard.
A managed service assigns planning, production, hosting and ongoing changes to an accountable provider. Elkwood is our service, so it must be judged as our own offer rather than a neutral software recommendation. We build and manage straightforward UK small-business websites from £25 a month, including design, copy, hosting, technical upkeep and reasonable text and image amendments.
The boundary matters. Elkwood is not designed for complex ecommerce, bespoke application development or an ongoing SEO campaign. Review Elkwood's current pricing and what is included to see whether the scope matches the job.

Which Squarespace alternative fits your business?
Choose according to the job
Pick Wix when you want to remain DIY but need more layout and feature choice.
Pick Hostinger for a straightforward site when initial price is the main constraint.
Pick Shopify when stock, checkout and order operations are central.
Pick WordPress.org when open-ended control outweighs maintenance simplicity.
Pick Webflow or Framer when a capable designer will use the extra freedom.
Pick a managed service when you want a website handled within an agreed scope.
Stay with Squarespace when none of these solves an important problem. Improving page structure, copy or photography may deliver more value than changing the underlying platform.
Moving away from Squarespace safely
Squarespace can export certain content to a WordPress-format XML file, including one blog and some layout-page content. It does not export the complete site design, style settings, store pages, portfolio pages, drafts, custom CSS or every block type. Treat migration as a controlled rebuild.
Before moving:
Inventory every live URL, title, description, image and downloadable asset.
Keep the domain in an account the business controls and record its DNS settings.
Export eligible content and separately retain anything the export omits.
Map every valuable old URL to a matching new page and configure permanent redirects.
Rebuild forms, analytics, consent, email and payment connections.
Test mobile layouts, forms, checkout and tracking before changing DNS.
Crawl the new site after launch and keep the old subscription until the move is verified.
A platform change is successful when customers and search engines reach the right content without interruption. A visually pleasing homepage is only one part of that work.

Quick answers
Frequently asked questions
What is the best alternative to Squarespace?
Wix is the closest general DIY competitor. Shopify is stronger for serious ecommerce, WordPress.org for technical ownership, and Webflow or Framer for advanced design. A managed service is better when you do not want to build the site.
Is there a cheaper alternative to Squarespace?
Hostinger and some Wix plans can start below Squarespace Basic, but promotions and plan inclusions differ. Compare the required tier, annual commitment, renewal, VAT, extensions and your time rather than the headline price.
Which Squarespace alternative is best for a small business?
For a service business, Wix or a managed service may be the most relevant comparison. Shopify suits retail, WordPress suits a content heavy or extensible requirement, and Webflow or Framer suit businesses with design expertise available.
Is WordPress better than Squarespace?
WordPress offers more control, hosting choice and extensibility. Squarespace bundles hosting and software maintenance into a more constrained system. WordPress is better when those freedoms are required and maintained; Squarespace is easier when they are not.
What if I do not want to build the website myself?
Compare managed services, freelancers and agencies by deliverables, limits and ongoing responsibility. Confirm who owns the domain, writes the copy, supplies images, maintains hosting and handles future changes.
